Origins of Latin American Fashion:
Bicentenarium Sustainability, Fashion and Culture

Ixel Moda Congress, Cartagena de Indias 26-28 of September 2011

Fashion represents an entire process that starts from design, and more than reflecting actual tendencies, it brings up alternatives and constructs utopias. Fashion can rearticulate the past, empowering sectors of the population and even “producing” a cultural meaning. This is, fashion as a social profound experience that invites the body to assume certain identities, and sometimes, exceed the limits and create new personalities. In the atmosphere of international transactions, multi cultural influences and thinking in the 200 year independence as an index of a large process that continues now at days, how can we get closer to the power of its message and transformations? Ixel moda will analyze these transformative qualities of fashion along with other key questions that come next to social, sensorial and special framework. Latin American fashion will define itself in wider terms, acknowledging those moments in which design becomes fashion, the way in which fashion spreads all of its manifestations and converts into a transversal and worldwide phenomenon.
Ixel Moda 2011 is seeking proposals for short presentations of 15 to 20 minutes for its next congress. The presentations will be based in written pieces of 8 to 10 pages long with bibliography included (no more than 30.000 characters spaces in between included). Proposals for interdisciplinary panels of 3 to 4 persons (moderated by a member of the table), will also be accepter and reviewed, regarding particular subjects and proposals for live interviews that emphasize on those themes included in Ixel Moda´s agenda.
Since it is a Latin American Congress, in Ixel Moda 2011, proposals in Spanish, Portuguese and English will also be accepted, and in several cases it will count with simultaneous translation. The goal for this years´ congress will be to be all united as in intercultural academic community, creating an interesting exchanging space that integrates all of the academic voices in a concert that explores the origins of Latin American fashion.

All of the proposals for presentations in the congress must be handed in before May 15th 2011 to the following email address: ixelmoda2011@gmail.com, sent to Alex Blanc and Regina A. Root. The decision regarding the works accepted and included in Ixel Moda will be taken in that same month. Ixel Moda reserves its right to film and uses as reclaim to Ixel this approaches and/or publish certain pieces approved in a volume virtually edited.

This year Ixel Moda is launching a book with the best presentations of Latin American origins in fashion,  published by Estação das Letras e Cores and edited by members of the scientific committee, who come to be some of the most important fashion researchers in Latin American: Alex Blanch (Spain), Kathia Castilho (Brazil) y Regina Root (USA). Those presenters who would like to be considered for this publication must complete a written essay no longer than 30.000 characters with spaces included for July 15 2011, sent to Kathia Castilho (Anhembi Morumbi University), katcast@uol.com.br,  and Regina Root (William and Mary University), raroot@wm.edu.  The essays that include images must come with all the necessary permissions for its publication at the moment of delivery.

What is Ixel Moda?

For three days each year, Ixel Moda unites investigators, designers, professionals, entrepreneurs and journalists from all over the world in one unique congress in the Americas. The academic side connects theory with practice, with the purpose of understanding in a better way the ethical questions related to the fashion industry, and to put in dialogue all the possible tendencies for the future. The participants in the academic congress postulate new tracks of academic investigation. The Ixel Moda catwalks present some of the best practices in Latin American design.
